In 1963 Dick James Music created a company called Northern Songs for the purpose of publishing the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The company went public in 1965 with Lennon and McCartney owning only 15% of the company’s shares.  Dick James and Charles Silver held the controlling shares, approximately 37% of the company.

In 1968 the Beatles created Apple Publishing and instead of renewing with Northern Songs George Harrison and Ringo Starr signed with Apple Publishing.  George Harrison later created a company called Harrisongs, which still owns the rights to many of his later songs hits including: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Something”. Ringo Starr also created a publishing company named Startling Music, which holds the rights to songs like “Octopus’s Garden” and “Don’t Pass Me By.”

Lennon and McCartney attempted to buy Northern Songs in 1969 but instead James and Silver sold the company to Associated Television (ATV), a British TV company. Then, in 1985, after a short period in which ATV was owned by an Australian business magnate ATV Music and the rights to over 200 Lennon/McCartney songs was sold to Michael Jackson for $47 million.  Michael Jackson outbid both Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono.

Since 1995, Michael Jackson and Sony/ATV Music Publishing have jointly owned most of the Lennon-McCartney songs.  John Lennon's estate and Paul McCartney still receive their songwriter shares of all royalties.
